"Wild" Red Berry

"Wild" Red Berry was one of the first active wrestlers to transition to being a manager. Donning a derby and wielding a sawed-off cane with a robust vocabulary to match, Berry was a very colorful figure. The former NWA light heavyweight standout would answer the call of Italian-Australian wrestler, Al Costello, who formed the legendary Fabulous Kangaroos with fellow Australia native Roy Heffernan. The combo paid off as Berry guided the duo to two NWA US Tag Team Championship reigns in the Capitol Wrestling territory (which later evolved into WWE) and riled up audiences. He also never shied away from getting involved in the in-ring action on behalf of his clients.

Berry also had a stable of other notable charges were such as Gorilla Monsoon, Killer Kowalski, Hans Mortier, Toru Tanaka, and Bull Ramos. The men served as top challengers to WWWF Champion Bruno Sammartino, establishing a formula that would be continued to be used in the WWE for years. Along with Bobby Davis Berry would become one of the top heel managers in the promotion. He once again guided his men to tag gold when Monsoon and Kowalski captured the WWWF U.S. Tag Team Titles in November 1963. Berry retired in the late '60s.
