A Texas cowgirl would make history in New York on the evening of July 29, 1972. Susan Green faced The Fabulous Moolah in the second women's match ever at Madison Square Garden. She was challenging for the NWA Women's World Championship and was defeated.
Green went on to challenge Moolah for the Women's Championship several times throughout the '70s. She would actually win it via submission in a shoot match in 1976. However, Vincent J. McMahon ordered her to return it a few days later and the title win wasn’t acknowledged when WWE bought the rights to the title and dubbed it the WWF Women’s Championship in the early '80s.
Green became one of the most respected women's wrestlers. She would even be named the 1976 PWI Girl Wrestler Of The Year. Unfortunately, a neck injury in 1977 sidelined her until '82. She defeated Donna Christanello in her final WWE match in Toronto in August 1984.
